Power Ballad (15)

A musical comedy-drama about a fading pop star who steals another performer’s unreleased song and turns it into a massive global hit. The down-at-heel songwriter travels to Los Angeles to reclaim the credit and recognition he deserves. A feel-good film, full of warmth and humour featuring an unhinged, standout performance by Paul Rudd as the ballad’s frustrated originator. The clever plot builds to a powerful, emotional resolution.

The Christophers (15)

A dark drama-with-laughs In which the children of a once highly acclaimed artist hire an art restorer to ‘complete’ their dying father’s unfinished Christopher series of paintings in order to secure a massive inheritance. This British film starring Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, James Corden and Jessica Gunning, crackles with wit and twists. Ian McKellen’s trademark cantankerous, scenery-chewing performance as the ageing artist is worth the admission alone.
